Houston Geological Society
President’s Page May 2023:
Greetings fellow geoscientists and HGS Members! We continue to build membership, improve attendance/participation in events, and we are making good progress in achieving financial sustainability.
In addition, voting for the 2023-2024 HGS Officers opened April 10 and runs through May 10.
The Nominations Committee has thoughtfully presented us with a fine slate of candidates.
Please read the bios in this Bulletin and cast your ballot for next year’s board.
Membership
In-person events that span a range of subjects continue to contribute to membership renewals and new members. Please continue to boost our membership by encouraging your work colleagues and service company contacts to become members. Logical service company sponsors include mudloggers, wireline companies, directional companies, log analysts, and rock labs.
Even if folks are not geologists, they can become HGS Associate Members.

Financial Sustainability
Achievement of our financial sustainability goal requires membership support and member participation in the society-sponsored events as well as active solicitation of sponsors.
Please encourage your service company contacts to become HGS sponsors. Also, if you are a consulting geologist or have your own generating entity, you could consider advertising in the bulletin or sponsoring an event to assist in securing work or drilling partners.
The Board of HGS officers and I thank you for your support of the Houston Geological Society with your membership and your participation in the scheduled events. We also thank all the committee chairs and volunteers who help us carry out our mission. We encourage you to join us and get reconnected to your local geological community. Last but not least, we thank our numerous sponsors that have generously supported HGS over the past year.
Keep up the great work!
Walter S. Light, Jr. - President
