Basin Modeling Course Description
This is an intensive 5-hour course in basin modeling for oil exploration to provide the geoscientist with the fundamentals of procedures and data requirements.
This course aims to equip geoscientists with essential knowledge and skills in basin modeling procedures and the associated data requirements. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals necessary for effective basin analysis. Participants will delve into the key principles of basin modeling, exploring topics such as Petroleum Systems, thermal history, hydrocarbon generation, migration, and preservation mechanisms.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Building the Physical Model: Understand the geological processes shaping sedimentary basins and their implications for basin modeling and the Petroleum System
- Building the Thermal Model: Learn the principles of thermal modeling to assess the history of temperature changes within the basin, crucial for understanding hydrocarbon maturation.
- Building the Generative Model: Explore the mechanisms of hydrocarbon generation, migration, accumulation and preservation, essential for predicting potential reservoirs.
By the end of this course, participants will be well-equipped to apply basin modeling techniques in real-world scenarios, enabling them to make informed decisions in the exploration and development of hydrocarbon resources. Whether you are a seasoned geoscientist or a professional seeking to enhance your skills, this course provides a solid foundation for effective basin analysis.
About the Instructor Angel Callejon
Petroleum Systems Assessment Specialist
https://www.linkedin.com/in/callejon
Angel joined the oil industry in 1988 after teaching geology five and half years at Universidad Central de Venezuela. Since then, has been applying geochemistry and basin modeling for exploration at PDVSA, UH, PRA, ExxonMobil and Equinor within a Basin Genetics framework and most recently for production where he used basin modeling and geochemistry to predict GOR and PVT properties in unconventional plays. Angel also developed a chemo-stratigraphic framework for the Austin Chalk, Eagle Ford, and Buda Formations to characterize and drill sweet spots within the unconventional plays.
Since late 2015 Angel has been an independent consultant in geochemistry and petroleum systems analysis for petroleum exploration and production, and recently accruing expertise in carbon capture, geological storage and monitoring.
Angel is well published, a reviewer for the Journal of Marine and Petroleum Geology, Organic Geochemistry and AAPG journals, and has lectured on the topic of Petroleum Systems at the University of Houston for the past 15 years. Angel joined the Houston Geological Society’s Continuing Education Committee early 2023 and is the actual chairperson of the committee
