Maps in Schools

The Houston Geological Society is excited to be part of the Maps in Schools project! The goal of the project is to plant the seeds of geologic curiosity in students by encouraging an interest in science in general and geology in particular. We think that the USGS Tapestry of Time and Terrain (see figure) can do just that and we need your help! With the recent approval of Earth Science as a fourth year of high school science in Texas, more students than ever before will be exposed to the geosciences. This is the perfect opportunity for the HGS to share its knowledge and enthusiasm for Earth Science with local students! This map offers a great entrée into local classrooms by providing a starting point for discussion. The Tapestry of Time and Terrain depicts both the topography and geology of the United States. It is the most detailed and accurate portrait of the U.S. land surface and the ages of its underlying rock formations yet displayed in the same image. The map...

Annual Africa Conference

The Annual Africa Conference is a international conference which is co-sponsored held sponsoired by the HGS and the PESGB (Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain).

The location of the conference alternates between Houston and London but is occasionally held in other cities like Cape Town, South Africa. The coordinating committee within the HGS is the International Exploration Group.

HGS is where teachers look for help teaching the earth sciences in their classrooms. We provide speakers, docents, and Maps in the Classroom. Of course, HGS is you! We need your help.

Please let us know if you are willing to help by signing up for our volunteer list. You can let us know by sending an e-mail message to the HGS education liaison, Dr. Brad Hoge.

Once we have a list of volunteers, we will post your contact information here. Teachers will be able to contact you directly to ask for your help. Please indicate in your e-mail to Brad Hoge what you are willing to offer, and what specific talents and content-area expertise you are interested in sharing.

With your help we can improve earth science education in Houston. Thank you!

In order to avoid processing delays, it is important that all requested information is provided on the application. Downloading the HGS-GSH Membership Directory

Only HGS members can download a copy of the HGS-GSH Directory of members. You will need your pre-assigned password and username in order to log on and download the membership directory. Most members already know their password. Those who have never logged on may need to read the instructions. Note that members who do not know their password and who use a spam blocker may not be able to get a copy of their password sent to them. In that case, contact the webmaster and he will set up a temporary username and password for you to log on the first time.
