Only HGS members can download a copy of the HGS-GSH Directory of members. You will need your pre-assigned password and username in order to log on and download the membership directory. Most members already know their password. Those who have never logged on may need to read the instructions. Note that members who do not know their password and who use a spam blocker may not be able to get a copy of their password sent to them. Annual Africa Conference

The Annual Africa Conference is a international conference which is co-sponsored held sponsoired by the HGS and the PESGB (Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain).

The location of the conference alternates between Houston and London but is occasionally held in other cities like Cape Town, South Africa. The coordinating committee within the HGS is the International Exploration Group.

To get a letter to the Editor published in the HGS Bulletin:

Email the editor directly and include your letter in Word format. Be aware that letters may not get published for 2 months due to lead time assembling the Bulletin.

To submit an article to the HGS Bulletin, send material directly to the Editor via email.

The Editor needs the text in Word with high resolution images included as figures/photos. You do not need to layout the material for publication; we employ a design professional to do this.

Do not insert the figures into the Word document, but attach the .jpg , .tif or ppt files separately in the email to the editor. We need a minimum of 300 dpi resolution for publication.

While not required, we also request a short biographical sketch and a photographic portrait of the author to run with the article.

To volunteer for the Bulletin Committee, contact the editor.

HGS needs volunteers to proofread upcoming issues.

To run for election as Bulletin Editor, you must be an active member of HGS.

The HGS Board chooses a candidate for Editor-Elect based on the recommendation of the Nominating Committee. If you would like to be considered for this position, please contact the HGS President. Nominees are picked in January for Editor-Elect to take office in July. Editors are geoscientists and no formal training in journalism or graphics design is needed to be Bulletin Editor.

The 2007-2008 HGS Board approved the following statement :

The Houston Geological Society supports the teaching of science in Texas schools that is based upon the scientific method. Part of the mission of the HGS is to disseminate geological information and to aid and encourage academic training in the geosciences. The Houston Geological Society believes that earth science education must include the concepts of an old and continually evolving Earth as documented by empirical and measurable evidence.

"No Child Left Inside"

October 12-18, 2008

AGI is pleased to announce the theme of Earth Science Week 2008: “No Child Left Inside.” Being held October 12-18, Earth Science Week 2008 will encourage young people to learn about the geosciences by getting away from the television, off the computer, and out of doors.

AGI hosts Earth Science Week in cooperation with sponsors as a service to the public and the geoscience community. Each year, local groups, educators, and interested individuals organize celebratory events. Earth Science Week offers opportunities to discover the Earth sciences and engage in responsible stewardship of the Earth.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first Earth Science Week, held in 1998. The program is supported by the U.S. Geological Survey, NASA, the AAPG Foundation, International Polar Year, and other major geoscience groups.

The Houston Geological Society is excited to be part of the Maps in Schools project! The goal of the project is to plant the seeds of geologic curiosity in students by encouraging an interest in science in general and geology in particular. We think that the USGS Tapestry of Time and Terrain (see figure) can do just that and we need your help! With the recent approval of Earth Science as a fourth year of high school science in Texas, more students than ever before will be exposed to the geosciences. This is the perfect opportunity for the HGS to share its knowledge and enthusiasm for Earth Science with local students! This map offers a great entrée into local classrooms by providing a starting point for discussion. The Tapestry of Time and Terrain depicts both the topography and geology of the United States. HGS Logo Design

The official insignia of the society was adopted in 1949. At Phil Martyn's insistence, an emblem contest was started to provide the society with an official insignia. On January 29, 1949 the late Walter J. Osterhoudt was named the winner of the contest. The HGS emblem is best described in his own words.

"The oil derrick is firmly established upon the Gulf Coast plain overlooking Galveston Bay, through which passes much of the oil to the markets of the world. Beyond Galveston Bay is the Gulf of Mexico, a new province, which challenges geologists and geophysicists to almost unlimited new reserves. Under the oil derrick is a cross section of a typical Gulf Coast salt dome. The words 'Houston Geological Society' are arranged upon a circle which is symbolical of the world, because our geologists come from and travel to all places on the earth in search of oil and other minerals. The five points of the design are a pleasant reminder that we, the members of the Society, are privileged to live in Texas. The 1923 is the year in which the Society was organized."

Vendor Corner: The Vendor Corner opportunity allows informal commercial presentations at the HGS Dinner meetings. This allows you to convey information to the audience; it also provides a useful focal point for discussions during the social hour. Presentations may be poster-style; or brochures; or they may project onto a wall, screen, or pop-up booth.

The vendor will get one linked logo ad in one Newsletter for each event they sponsor.
If for some reason (if we forget) a vendor does not get in the next Newsletter, the vendor will be entitled to receive a logo ad in a later Newsletter.
The vendor must supply the logo to the Webmaster. ( 150x36 pixels)
The vendor must supply the URL to the Webmaster.
This policy can be withdrawn without notice.

Participants in the Vendor' Corner Program are asked for a $250.00 contribution.

Qualifications for Active Membership or Emeritus
1)	Have a degree in geology or an allied geoscience from an accredited college or university; or
2)	Have a degree in science or engineering from an accredited college or university and have been engaged in the professional study or practice of earth science for at least five (5) years.
3)	Emeritus Members are those who have attained the age of 65 and been an Active Member for at least ten years. Qualifying Active Members may apply here or to the Membership Chairman (not to the Executive Board) for designation to this category.
Qualifications for Associate Membership (including students)
1)	Be involved in the application of the earth or allied sciences.
2)	Be a full-time student enrolled in geology or in the related sciences.
Administrative Year: July 1 through June 30.

Houston Geological Auxiliary (HGA)

Did you know that the HGS sponsors a social organization for your wife or spouse? The Houston Geological Auxiliary (HGA) was formed in 1950. Its purpose is to encourage social relations among its members and to assist the Houston Geological Society in any manner they shall request.

There are five events per year. Each event includes a social time and entertainment. There is a luncheon in September, a Christmas event, a Game Day in February, a Spring luncheon in March, and a luncheon/business meeting in May which is usually highlighted by a style show.

We encourage the spouses of active HGS members to join HGA for these activities. Our dues are $20.00 a year.

If your wife enjoys smaller groups, we have GeoWives which is open to members of HGA. Their dues are $7.50. The more relaxed, smaller group makes it easier to get acquainted with everyone. GeoWives has a monthly meeting which usually includes an East Texas historical day tour and other interesting programs.

Houstons geologists have seen the petroleum industrys progress almost from its infancy and have contributed in a large way to that progress. The first commercial geologic department in the United States devoted to the winning of oil from the earth was founded in Houston in 1897 for the Southern Pacific by the great pioneer geologist Dr. Edwin T. Dumble. With the discovery of Spindletop near Beaumont on January 10, 1901, the Texas oil boom started in earnest and the stage was set for the geologists of Houston. The early geologists met for lunch and in January 1920 they organized into a special group. This organization was short lived and in the summer of 1923, at the invitation of Donald C.
